Just as Pokémon Pokopia gives Kanto a second chance, we give people, materials, and the planet a second chance through the processes of deconstruction, salvage, and reuse.

Have you had a chance to play Pokémon Pokopia yet? Since its highly anticipated release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5, 2026, it seems like everyone in Baltimore—and across the globe—has been captivated by this incredible social simulation game. Co-developed by Game Freak and Omega Force, the game tasks players with a monumental but deeply rewarding challenge: rebuilding a broken, post-apocalyptic world. Playing as a Ditto that has taken human form, gamers spend hours collecting materials, crafting, and collaborating with Pokémon to transform Kanto’s desolate “Withered Wasteland” into a thriving, beautiful utopia. It is a game rooted in conservation, environmentalism, and the underlying belief that even the most forgotten, discarded places can be wonderfully renewed.

If this digital philosophy of transforming ruins into a renewed paradise sounds familiar to you, it is because it directly mirrors our very real, impactful mission right here at Second Chance, Inc. Based in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit enterprise was built on a mission that is simple but profound: Retrain, Reclaim, and Renew. Just as Pokémon Pokopia gives the Kanto region a second chance, our organization gives people, materials, and the environment a second chance through the processes of deconstruction, salvage, and reuse.

Here is a closer look at how the hottest game on the Nintendo Switch 2 perfectly illustrates the core values of our innovative social enterprise, and how we are living out those lessons every single day.

Reclaim: Salvaging the Past to Protect the Future

In the real world, we don’t have to look to a video game screen to see the power of this philosophy in action. Since our inception in 2001, Second Chance, Inc. has been championing these exact ideals through the tangible, hands-on work of building deconstruction.

When a home or commercial building reaches the end of its life, the traditional approach is demolition. Demolition is fast, but it is incredibly destructive to the environment. It crushes historic architectural elements, destroys old-growth lumber, and sends massive amounts of debris straight into overflowing landfills. It treats our shared architectural history and our planet’s limited natural resources as completely disposable.

We offer a sustainable alternative. Instead of swinging a wrecking ball, our expert deconstruction crews use hand tools to carefully dismantle buildings piece by piece. We reclaim everything we possibly can—from structural lumber, bricks, and pavers, to vintage stained glass, lighting fixtures, and architectural artifacts.

We then bring these reclaimed materials back to our sprawling, more than 200,000-square-foot retail center on Ridgely Street in South Baltimore. When you walk through our doors, you will find an eclectic, historic, and welcoming space packed to the gills with previously loved home items. You aren’t just looking at used goods; you are looking at reclaimed history. Every salvaged door, window, or piece of flooring purchased at Second Chance keeps countless tons of usable materials out of the waste stream. Just as players in Pokopia look at a pile of rubble and see the foundation for a new paradise, we look at a building slated for demolition and see a treasure trove of reusable resources waiting for their second act.

Retrain: Equipping People with the Skills to Succeed

Perhaps the most beautiful synergy between Pokémon Pokopia and Second Chance lies in the concept of learning and growth. In the game, Ditto relies on its unique ability to transform and adapt. By learning from the Pokémon around it, Ditto acquires the necessary skills to rebuild the world from the ground up. The journey is not just about changing the physical landscape; it is about the protagonist evolving to meet the challenges of the day.

At Second Chance, Inc., our most important work actually has nothing to do with buildings, bricks, or lumber. The materials we salvage are simply the vehicle for our primary mission: workforce development. We specialize in providing job training for displaced and unemployed workers, particularly those who face significant barriers to employment, such as returning citizens who have previously been incarcerated.

For many of these individuals, the traditional job market can feel like a permanently closed door. At Second Chance, we provide an open one. We hire men and women and retrain them in warehouse operations, retail sales, and safety protocols. As our team members painstakingly dismantle buildings, they are simultaneously rebuilding their own lives. They learn marketable skills, earn a living wage, and regain a sense of dignity and purpose.

Just as the restoration of Kanto in Pokopia relies on collaboration and the sharing of skills, our retraining programs rely on community support to help Baltimore’s most vulnerable residents transform their futures. We fundamentally believe that everyone—and everything—deserves a second chance. Over the years, we have seen thousands of lives completely turned around by the power of a fresh start and a supportive community.

Renew: A True Triple-Bottom-Line Focus

The ultimate goal in Pokémon Pokopia is “renewal.” After hours of crafting, building, and nurturing, the Withered Wasteland is entirely renewed. It becomes a vibrant utopia where Pokémon and humans coexist in harmony, supported by the very environment they helped to heal.

For us at Second Chance, Inc., “Renew” is the final, triumphant pillar of our mission. From the very beginning, we have operated as an innovative social enterprise with a true triple-bottom-line focus. That means we strive to make sure everything we do is environmentally sound, socially responsible, and financially viable.

When a customer comes to our Baltimore warehouse and purchases a reclaimed clawfoot tub, a bundle of hardwood flooring, or a set of vintage kitchen cabinets, they are renewing their own home. But more importantly, the revenue generated from that purchase is funneled directly back into our workforce development programs. This creates a beautifully self-sustaining cycle of renewal.

By keeping materials out of landfills, we renew the environment. By providing career training and meaningful employment, we renew individuals and stabilize families. And by investing in the local economy and reducing waste, we renew the community of Baltimore as a whole.

Turn Virtual Inspiration into Real-World Action

Video games like Pokémon Pokopia captivate us because they tap into a universal human desire to fix what is broken, to create beauty out of chaos, and to leave the world better than we found it. It is incredibly satisfying to watch a digital wasteland transform into a lush paradise through your own hard work.

But why stop at the screen? The mission to retrain, reclaim, and renew isn’t just a fantasy limited to your Nintendo Switch 2—it is a daily reality happening right now at Second Chance, Inc.

If you have been inspired by the environmentalism, resourcefulness, and community-building of Pokémon Pokopia, we warmly invite you to take real-world action. Come visit our massive warehouse at 1700 Ridgely Street in Baltimore to discover reclaimed treasures for your next DIY or home renovation project. If you are cleaning out your own home, consider donating your gently used furniture and building materials to keep them out of the landfill. Volunteer with us and take hands-on action. And if you are planning a residential or commercial renovation, choose deconstruction over demolition.
