June 2008
Hello Sweaty Salvagers!
At the end of a particularly hot day, when you’ve finally washed off the last drop of grimy-oh, I’ll stop there. What little could satisfy more than a cold beverage? I know! A cold basement remodeled to dispense cold beverages stylishly and ecologically, of course!
Check out this beautiful walk-in freezer façade, which comes with a mirrored door, sidelight in frame, header, cornice, and an escape hatch – to provide plenty of hilarious situations with your inebriated friends…and family.

However, you may have a sizeable space within your home that demands something more sophisticated and less pub-like (it really depends upon which neighborhood you live in), we also happen to have a complete double mantle made out of cool-to-the-touch slate. If you are looking for architecture that will command attention yet just as easily fall into the background, this may very well be the ticket. You can have it installed and ready for stockings this cold, cold, refreshing winter.

January 2008
Dear Readers!
Welcome to the New Year. I would like to take this time to try something new.
As opposed to writing about a current event or promotion, I’m going to tell you about an item that’s been the center of my world at Second Chance Inc., and that item is…
doors.
You may have noticed from prior visits that our Warehouse 1 door section was looking slim and uneventful. And doors are, in many ways, one of the most important forms of architecture we literally come across, and in bad luck run into every day.
Now you will find a more plentiful selection of 5-panel and 6-panel doors, as this appears to be a more sought after style. 4-panel doors still have a place, with their historic, quintessential row house aesthetic. ½ glass doors are growing in quantity as well, ranging in style from the stately and reserved to the ostentatious. And ever-popular French doors, albeit harder for us to acquire in excellent shape, will be in greater number. I’m happy to say that nearly all of our door sections are straightening up, growing out, and are awaiting your attention. If you happen to have a door in need of a good home, let us know! I could always use more friends- I mean, doors.
P.S. If closet doors are your thing, now’s your time! We have more than can even be organized.

December 2007
Season's Greetings, folks!
You know that certain someone-when you ask them what they want for the holidays, they reply “Oh, I don't know. You don't have to get me anything.”
What a lie!
Oh the humanity!
Why not get them a Second Chance Inc. gift certificate. Far more substancial than a flimsy gift card, these salvage gems are perfect for the creative, come-what-may type. Simply provide names and a value amount and allow them to scour our showroom for inspiration! They'll return with a car full of what others would call “stuff”. But they know better.
And we know better...

November 2007
Hello Readers.
I have wonderful news this month for those seeking hard-to-find varieties of old-growth hardwood flooring and paneling.
Our sources have put us in touch with a small mill owner in Paw Paw, West Virginia.
The area, dense in many tree species from Cherry to Black Walnut, is being developed. By no means are we celebrating the demise of a valuable habitat. At least we can say that the beautiful wood, a product of trees made stronger and denser with maturity, will be salvaged for reuse.
Valued customers of Second Chance will have the opportunity to custom order the lumber as tongue and groove, v-groove, or plank flooring and paneling. Samples are available in our showroom, and I cannot express enough the difference in quality when compared to “trash tree” new-growth flooring or pre-fabricated, engineered flooring. The end results from century of wear will be proof enough.
We have just begun this relationship, and we look forward to being able to provide the community with this gorgeous, noteworthy materials.

- Full-Time/Part-Time Greeters Position Filled

Thanks for your support!
October 2007
Welcome to my favorite month of the year, full of fun, fright and felt (in the form of large scale, homemade dinosaur costumes). We here at Warehouse 1 have quite a few items that excite fear. One of which is architecture containing lead. To address the issue, we would like to invite one and all to our next special event.
*There has been a change in plans, Lead Awareness Night will be held Thursday, October 25, 5-7 pm NOT Saturday, October 27. We appologize for the inconvenience.

Another thing that strikes fear into our retail hearts is promotion confusion. I’d like to take a few minutes to lay out what is currently on sale, what is remaining at a sale price, and what sales will no longer be in effect. It is my hope that in the future, we can better communicate these intentions to you, the wonderful customer.

We apologize to anyone who misunderstood or was misinformed about any of the above information.
Now on to something corny!
Last Halloween, we were inspired by an article in Country Home magazine that demonstrated how to make a bona fide “junk-o-lantern”. The idea is simple; grab a pumpkin, grab some snappy salvage, and fasten/jab salvage into surface of pumpkin. The results are really cool (believe me on this one!) In fact, we have photos. We used faux pumpkins, but I recommend the fleshy variety that you can gut yourself, for gore factor.

Thanks for screaming!

Why so sad, salvage enthusiasts?
Did the vacation of your dreams pass you by, or did the idea transform into 15 undisturbed minutes of staring at your cubicle wall?
Well, every once in a while, we get pieces of architecture that really impress us. Allow your eyes to take a vacation on these exceptional historic items.

Want to get down to Highlandtown with your salvage? We have a new sale item,

Perfect for flanking your marble steps.
Also, I’m happy to announce the new celebrity status of our warehouse manager, Mark Moreland. Click on this link to see what sensationalist stunts he's up to this time!

I will no longer speak of the amazing-ness of this sale. Come see for yourself. You’ve been warned.

July 2007
Hot HOt HOT! Welcome to July. Extreme weather and warehouses do not mix, so I thank all the extreme souls who take the time to check us out. For the matter, anyone who brings us Gatorade could find themselves with a discount!
First and foremost, Second Chance, Inc. and I will be celebrating our independence by being Closed on July 4th.
We’ll show dependence to the organization the day before, as well as the rest of the week.
We will also be having a Customer Appreciation evening this month, with details included below. Cut out a printed copy of the below coupon (Print in black and white if you can. It’s a lot of toner!) and bring it with you to redeem the discount. This coupon is non-valid for consigned items or already discounted items (see previous months’ bulletins, the same sales apply).

Please think of us, somehow, as you spend time with the family at the pool or in an air conditioned movie theatre. As I think of you, I may reduce my original deal from Gatorade to a popsicle.

For Father's Day , Second Chance Inc., Warehouse 1 will be offering free prints of Washington D.C. to all fathers...and fans of fathers.
Ever found a unique item at Warehouse 1 that you had to have but was way out of your price range? Time and time again, you’d check up on that item to find it still available, and still with an unattainable price tag. Second Chance would like to help in this dilemma with a red tag sale. Perennial oddities and beauties alike with red tags will be reduced to a percentage of their original price after so many days.
For Example:
Lovely Double-Tier Mantle = $650.00 (before sale)
30 days later = 30% off
60 days later = 60% off
90 days later = 90% off (and in my house, just kidding!)
Many of these tags are entering their 30 day reduction period. Many will wait to see if they can get that fabulous vintage stove at its 90% off price, and hooray to you if you succeed. The trick is to get that stove before someone breaks down and grabs it first. Oh, what a vicious game!
And were not through!
Second Chance Inc. is having an Oak Flooring Blowout
(Blowout= Blown-Out Font). Oak flooring left over from our sale will remain $2.00 per square foot. Small lots of flooring from single sources (less than 150 square feet per lot) will be sold away for $1.50 per square foot. That's 50% off our original price! In place of these lots, we hope to have a cleaner and more user-friendly Warehouse #2.
As you are doing your annual spring cleaning along with us, please keep in mind that someone else may see your junk as a rarified treasure (I’m sure I’m not the only one with a deviant sense of taste!) Second Chance, Inc accepts donations in exchange for tax deductions, and with a little bit of effort, your items can be saved from a life of pollution.

May 2007
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Earth Week 2007 sale. I hope that the shutters look stately, the oak flooring appears lively underfoot, and the sinks hold water, well, swimmingly.
We still have a fair amount of this inventory left, and so we will be extending the days of our sale to Memorial Day weekend. All sale items and discounts are posted in April’s installment. Please help Second Chance, Inc do some much needed spring cleaning!
Additionally, I’m excited to mention that we have our largest single lot of heart pine flooring currently available! Each board is 3” wide and ¾” thick, with some pretty long runs. We are fortunate to reclaim the flooring from Fort Belvoire in Alexandria, VA. At this very moment, about 2,500 square feet remain, but it is going fast. This particular species of flooring is no longer harvested, is much stronger than a standard pine species, and has a distinct, vibrant grain.
Speaking of grain, this one reclaimed lot is quarter sawn! Quarter sawn heart pine! Do I have a floor somewhere in my imaginary home that needs this flooring?!
Please take this flooring off our hands and off my consciousness. We are selling it for $7.00 per square foot.

*We only have 2 hinged sets of 4 Royal seats available. I lost control of MS Paint.............
O’Boy! It’s March! One of the longest months of the year, March is known for extreme weather, extreme basketball, and a holiday riddled by extreme debauchery. Why not reward yourself, and the home you may find yourself retreating to, with some charming upholstered theatre seats.
Our seats hail from the former Orpheum Theatre in Fells Point as well as the infamous Royal Theatre from West Baltimore, which catered to Fats Waller and Billie Holiday, among others. We offer Orpheum seats in their original upholstery as well as reupholstered by the wonderful folks at Caroline Center Upholstery, an organization that provides support to women in need. Seats may be purchased assembled or unassembled at a discounted price.
If you want enough seats to cover an entire stadium or commercial structure, we have that too! At warehouse 4, you will find a gigantic amount of seats courtesy of the Mechanic theatre.
As always, if you like what you see, please contact us at:
info@secondchanceinc.org for more details.

We are still offering a beautiful set of stained glass windows from the Asbury Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Please refer to the January posting for information and feel free to contact us at our ever-ready “info” e-mail address for more details.
In other news, we have been fortunate to acquire a large collection of Mott bathroom fixtures. Portions of this inventory belong to us, in addition to consigned pieces. One can see within these sanitizing objects an elevation of form to the realm of art objects. Although very connected to the Victorian period, you may find that Mott fixtures can intermingle with contemporary pieces due the brand’s high quality standard. Our inventory remains ever-changing and unpredictable, so please stop by while they last.

We have quite a bit to flesh out. I will do my best to keep things interesting with news of new inventory and current events as they come my way. In the process, as with any point in this journey, I encourage any feedback from this and future postings to be sent to info@secondchanceinc.org.
Those who are familiar with the former layout of our website will notice that the "salvage search" feature has changed. Now, finally, you can see a true cross-section of our ever-expanding definition of architectural salvage at the click of a mouse. I hope I've baited you enough, please check it out!
Within this warehouse, we are very fortunate to have a full set of brilliant stained glass windows from the Asbury Methodist Church in Philadelphia, circa 1860. Richly hued and adorned with nature, geometric, and pictorial motifs, this series is possibly the most beautiful stained glass we've ever acquired. I've included an image of one of the more impressive pieces below. This window is 104 ¾" tall by 32" wide. It is priced at $5,877.00. Our intention was to sell them as a complete set, but we are also entertaining the possibility of selling them separately. Please contact us at the aforementioned e-mail address for more information. As we enter a new year, it becomes ever important to thank our customers for the way in which they benefit the future by purchasing reusable inventory. This year, we will continue to work with cities and communities to preserve architectural heritage, facilitate workforce training programs, and reduce waste in more efficient and successful ways. We can only do so with the good nature and generosity of individuals like you.
Thank you and have a wonderful New Year!
